COASS

Project In Brief:
COASS is an apps used to connect Profession Dental Student and patients with the appropriate requirement, schedule, and funding of the treatments.

Idea:
Based on Indonesian Health Ministry survey in 2007, 72.1% of Indonesian people have dental cavities. One of the reasons that dentist availability treats this problem is not enough. Ideal ratio between dentists in a population by the standard of WHO is about 1:2,000. While in Indonesia, the ratio is still 1:22,000. It is worsened by the fact that dentists aren’t spread evenly across the nation, 70% of them choose to do practices in Java. Every year, only 600 dentists are graduated. It’s predicted that the ideal ratio will be achieve in 2030. Before being dentist, graduate dentistry students have to pass profession (Co-ass) which takes about 2 years, but 50% of them take longer time.

This problem is then validated by interviewing Co-ass organization and national senate of dentistry student. They agreed that the reasons of Co-ass extension are most likely due to patient related problem. Furthermore, we analyze it by doing survey to ensure the root of the problem, solution which has already been provided, and validate the feasibility of the solution which we propose. From 77 students which we interview, 58.4% of them didn’t met their patient which has the right requirements, 81.8% had a hard time finding the right schedule for the patient because of patient’s activities, 50.6% because patient didn’t have enough money (and so Co-ass had to pay to accommodate treatment), and other such as BPJS (Government Health Insurance for certain cases).

The solutions have already existed such as screening to the villages and giving free treatment. However, it is not effective because it takes time and requires significant amount of funding. To ensure the market interest, we do surveys to 30 people, 93.8 % of them interest to care their dental problem to Co-ass because they can get a good dental care by co-ass with Dentist supervision in a lower price, besides they can help co-ass to fulfill their requirement. But, they can’t meet Co-ass easily because it’s hard to adjust the schedule and requirement they need. That’s why we are planning to develop application which gives ease for patients and Co-ass to meet together. By looking the survey result, we believe that the traffic of this application will be high. So, we provide advertisement space in our application.

This application is developed in hope that it will then be able to be integrated by government institutions e.g. public health office, dental hospitals, and NGOs. The benefits of being able to work with them are the app will spread faster due to socialization programs, getting lot of potential users, and looking for funding to coverage some treatment which is not covered by BPJS. Through this idea, we hope, Co-ass can meet their requirement and graduate on time. So, ratio of Dentist and population will be ideal soon and people can easily get the dental care.

9 Floor

Project In Brief:
9 floor, a co-living start-up in Taiwan, is endeavoring to provide a housing solution for young people living in urban areas.

Idea:
9floor, a co-living project/start up, is running 12 co-living apartments in Taipei. To solve our own problem of living in Taipei, my friends and I created a co-living community in this modern city. In Taipei, there's a phenomenon that most of the landlords/landladies tend to rent out their apartments in segments to earn the most rents they could get. Due to the sense of design, most of the properties for rent in Taipei have limited shared space for tenants to relax or connect with others. By expanding the shared space, we remodel and make the apartments with more publicities. Roommates may now be able to invite their friend back home to cook, to chill, to create memory together. We believe a decent living environment isn't all about nice facilities or luxury furnitures. Instead, connections with others should be cherished the most. By living together, we rebuild the community inside this disconnected society. With 9floor, we wish to create a different sense of home in modern cities.

Saathi Biodegradable Sanitary Pads Kristin Kagetsu

Saathi Biodegradable Sanitary Pads

Project In Brief:
Biodegradable sanitary pads made from locally-sourced banana fiber.

Idea:
25% of women in rural India miss up to 50 days of school/work per year due to lack of access to sanitary pads. This is the leading reason for higher dropout rates of school aged girls compared to boys in rural India. Those rural women who do buy sanitary pads also lack the proper infrastructure to dispose of them, and so usually burn them, exposing themselves and their environments to the toxic chemicals from plastics and additives in the pads.

Saathi has developed a biodegradable sanitary pad made from banana fiber to reduce sanitary pad waste and increase low-income and rural women's access to sanitary pads. Banana fiber is one of the most absorbent natural fibers and abundant in India. Our pads are designed with wings and unlike conventional sanitary pads, they do not contain any bleach or chemicals that can irritate skin. Most importantly, Saathi pads degrade within 6 months of disposal, 100 times faster than conventional pads, and eliminate the need for incineration, reducing CO2 production. We eliminate 60 kg of waste per woman in her lifetime.

Saathi positively impacts women, agriculture, and the local economy. We locally source all of our raw materials, including the banana tree fiber, providing Indian farmers additional income each harvest. We create employment opportunities in pad production for local women. Saathi employs a subsidy model that makes sanitary pads affordable to low-income women, funded by our urban market sales. Most importantly, girls in rural India will no longer miss school because they cannot access sanitary pads.

Green Yards

Project In Brief:
There is 220,000,000 liters of used cooking oil being dump into the drain in Malaysia each year. There is very limited option for recycling and disposal of the grease especially for household.Inappropriate disposal channel such as drains that are connected to the river not only polluting water resources but also affect millions of marine life.It also a waste of resources, grease can be used as raw material for biodiesel, candles, and soap production.

Idea:
Green yards collect the used cooking oil from the public including household. The used cooking oil is then substantially reprocessed into eco-cleaning products and eco-candles. In addition, this project can mobilize local community to support conservation by using the proper channel of discompose waste material. Moreover, the "grease to soaps" program was also launched, which provides free pick up services and free eco-kitchen soaps to encourage the public to recycle their used cooking oil. Green Yards also conducts eco-soap workshops to deliver cognizance and greater awareness among the local community and equip them with additional knowledge on how to reprocess grease into soaps.

Although there is some grease collector in the market, however, none of them is providing the services to household who produce smaller amount of grease. In addition, most of the collector only acts as a trader who collects the oil and resells them to company for unknown usage. Some of the oil were deodorized, bleached, and repackaged illegally to the market as a fresh oil to gain profit. All these highly refined used cooking oil are carcinogenic.

Hence, green yards strike to provide used cooking oil collection not only for commercial but also household. Moreover, our "grease to soaps" program also allowed public to get a free soap as incentive when they return their used cooking oil. In that case, not only the waste was recycled into good use, they also get free soap for their household cleaning. Besides, potential of used oil being processed into carcinogenic oil illegally also greatly reduced.

We makes a difference by providing grease recycling services to households, according to our survey, 90% of the household in Malaysia do not know what to do with their used cooking oil. They are forced to dump it into the sink, drain or even toilet bowl.

We are operating fully dependent from the revenue that generated from the sales of our eco-cleaning products, eco-candles and workshop itself. We also provide door gift and corporate gift customisation services. Besides that, the used cooking oil that does not meet our production standard can be sell to biodiesel maker as feedstock. The potential of waste management is huge, not only reducing the waste, but also producing something useful. As a saying goes "One man's trash is another man's treasure".

HongKong Intelligent Cognitive Assessment Platform

Project In Brief:
Break the barriers thereby alleviating the pressure of public healthcare system in fighting with dementia.

Idea:
The world is facing rapidly ageing population. Dementia ranked the 2nd leading disease, and in Hong Kong is the 8th leading causes of death. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 8 years, but in severe dementia cases, it can be as short as 3 years. Over 1.2 billion (17.3%) people worldwide are at high risk. It can neither be prevented nor cure. Early detection is the only way to help in delay progression.

Current cognitive screening assessment tools, such as MMSE and MoCA developed in the 70s and 90s respectively, require a one-to-one interview (around 30 - 60 mins) and well-trained professional to execute. The issues are a high demand on manpower and assessment time and costly due to expenditure on qualified professionals. Thus, screening assessment cannot be deployed in regular based, due to manpower shortage, instead can only be arranged until symptoms found. In consequence, dementia patients may miss their golden period of receiving effective cognitive treatment.

Hong Kong Intelligent Cognitive Assessment Platform (HK-iCap) is fast (20 mins), self-service cognitive assessment system in interactive game-style. The novel assessment method was developed by neuroscience Professors (PolyU and CUHK) and clinically validated by the Clinical Neurology Research Centre, Faculty of Madeline, CUHK. Any service providers for older persons such as NGOs, elderly centres, clinics and hospitals can adopt the system to deploy large scale and regular-based cognitive assessment service without the need of professionals to execute. With HK-iCap, professionals can delegate assessment tasks to general staff and reserve their precious time on performing data analysis and cognitive treatments for actually dementia patients in need. Furthermore, multiple subjects can be assessed simultaneity. For an elderly centre case, 90% of assessment time and over 50% of implementation cost can be reduced in comparing with traditional methods.

Over 3,000 real subjects have been assessed through our system with 80% sensitivity including 124 subjects provided by 8 elderly centres (in associate with 5 NGOs) during the pilot trial. Currently, 1 public hospital, 1 private clinic, and several elderly activities organisers are our paid customers.

Hong Kong’s market is our current focus, which has over 2.3 million potential end-users. All service providers for older persons can be our customers including over 30 NGOs, 380 elderly centres and housing, 53 public or private hospitals, 122 outpatient clinics, 32 insurance providers, and 20 research institutes. Future expansion will focus on Asia (e.g. Taiwan, Singapore) and the mainland China markets. Big data in dementia domain also drive future innovative products and new market. For example, predictive analytics using big data can bring cognitive assessment to next level toward the development of AI-based dementia diagnosis system in assisting doctor diagnosis process. Ultimately, big data driven strategic planning in dementia-related policy and resource allocation can alleviate the pressure of not only public healthcare system but also the entire community in fighting with dementia.

We are incubatee at HKSTP. We received Hong Kong ICT Awards 2016: Silver Award in Best ICT Startup, and Bronze Award & Special Mention (Silver Power) in Best Lifestyle, and HKQAA Hong Kong Registration – Start-ups with Platinum (the highest) classification.

玩具銀行 Toys Bank

Project In Brief:
To help ease the financial burden of buying toys on underprivileged families by reallocating toys.

Idea:
According to daily observations, wealthy families often discard a large number of toys which are almost new. It is better to reallocate them to people in need instead of wasting them. Most wealthy families buy their children new toys every 1-2 months on average, while old toys are stored at home and the families rarely play with them. After around one year, they will be discarded during house cleaning. The idea of Toys Bank is to recycle toys from wealthy families, and sell them to underprivileged families at 30% of the market price after cleaning and disinfection. Every toy sold by Toys Bank has a barcode label. When the buyers no longer like these toys, they can return them to Toys Bank. Toys Bank will repurchase them at half of their original selling prices, while the other half of the amount will be regarded as the administrative income of Toys Bank to meet the daily expenses. The reason for Toys Bank to charge fees is that buyers will learn to cherish resources through paying a little bit. As the idea of Toys Bank is to reallocate toys from wealthy families to underprivileged families at low prices, it is hoped to reduce the financial burden on parents of buying toys. Besides, it allows children from these families to have access to toys so that they can grow up healthier and happier. Their inferiority complex caused by poverty will be also reduced, and they can establish positive values through accessing to toys. Toys Bank’s toys repurchase policy allows them to be recycled in the community to achieve sustainable development.

Project In Brief:
Empowering patient centric & 360 caring between the care-takers, care-givers and service providers with an Affordable, Portable and Personal App

Idea:
acesome® consolidates care plan / treatment instructions including medication / diet / exercise / consultation etc. to allow both care-giver (doctor / nurse / physio / dietitian) and care-taker (patient / individual) to share / follow / advise the caring status and planning.

Inspired when taking care of his 86-year-old chronically ill grandma with other family members, our founder Mr Albert Au finds it difficult and inefficient to understand and perform most of the medical instructions and care plan arranged by medical professionals. A centralised platform which combines instructions from different specialists is undoubtedly a solution for the problem. This is especially true when facing the alarming aging population, controlling healthcare cost and enhancing efficiency is also of paramount importance for most governments around the world.

The solution is an integrated Personal Care Plan App, which is commoditized from the professional bedside nursing station system used currently in hospitals, with instant messaging features (i.e. WeChat / Whatsapp) for easy sharing and communication of the care plan

The portable App provides features for family sharing, caring scheduling & reminder and care plan details (i.e. medicine warning & instruction) for collaboration. This helps the care-takers and care-givers well synchronize and coordinate the nursing support in a timely and right resources manner

The target beneficiary groups are the elderly and patients with chronic disease who required long term care and their care-givers. Currently, both care-givers and care-takers face the challenge of in sharing and retrieving the health information as it is so disconnected with caring procedures. Our solution is to allow the stakeholders to easily get connected and communicate with the caring plan for the care-takers on an affordable / portable / personal platform. We have conducted a survey with Lingnan University and received a positive feedback on the features. Later, we have also conducted another survey with CUHK on the legislation and compliance of the solution and are highly appreciated. In the coming trial, we have identified the 1-2 pilot sites recommended by our partners as those users would like to enhance and leverage their services and patient engagement with our newly proposed solution.
